About the Artist: Beth Magyan
I have considered myself a ceramic artist for many years. Most of my professional development has been in that medium. A few years ago I was introduced to the art of paper folding and have found it to be just as rewarding as working in clay. It has provided me with a much needed creative balance. Working in clay requires patience and a thoughtful letting go of ideal results. Working in paper has the advantage of immediate gratification. Working in both materials offers challenges that continue to hold my attention and that keep me moving forward as an artist.
The traditional origami crane and dragonfly are the primary elements in this jewelry line of earrings and pins. Japanese Yuzen and Thai Mulberry papers are folded and assembled with additional components that include metal beads, asian charms, Swarovski crystals and ceramic pieces. The Dragonfly and Twig pins are made from floral wire and tape. Most pieces are coated with a polycrylic medium for added durability and moisture/fade resistance.
The ceramic bells and totem pieces are made from both a terra cotta and white earthenware clay body. The various elements are hand carved, pinched, slip cast, pierced and sometimes glazed using low fire glazes. Other components included in the assemblages are beads and bamboo. The bells make a sound in the wind but are relatively quiet pieces to be enjoyed indoors or outdoors. No two pieces are exactly alike. Textures and patterns will vary slightly.
Both product lines are made by the Beth Magyan in her studio. All origami work is folded and assembled by her. The papers are purchased through various specialty sources.
